be grounded in ~ で「~に基づいている」、mercy は「慈悲」。

Hope for Christian belief is grounded in God's love and mercy, and these are indeed seen as certain. They belong to what it is for God to be God.

Terry Eagleton, Hope without Optimism, p. 83

<解説>

Hope for Christian belief is grounded in God's love and mercy, and these are indeed seen as certain.

They belong to what it is for God to be God.

what S is で「Sというもの」。it は形式主語で、本当の主語は for God to be God(神が神であること)。

以前にも紹介した Parker's Wine Bargains(邦題『ワインの帝王ロバート・パーカーが薦める世界のベスト・バリューワイン』)(2009年)から。

It can safely be said that this cast of vine characters, together with the unique microclimates and fiercely proud local populace, make for a range of wines whose like will not be found elsewhere on earth [...].

Parker's Wine Bargains: The World's Best Wine Values Under $25, p. 230

解説>

It can safely be said that this cast of vine characters, together with the unique microclimates and fiercely proud local populace, make for a range of wines whose like will not be found elsewhere on earth [...].

It can safely be said that S V.

~'s like will not be found elsewhere on earth.

It can safely be said that this cast of vine characters, together with the unique microclimates and fiercely proud local populace, make for a range of wines ←[whose like will not be found elsewhere on earth]

It was a battle the like of which those present had never before witnessed.
(Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English)

Those present had never before witnessed the like of ~ .

It was a battle ←[the like of which   those present had never before witnessed].

'Despair', Kierkegaard writes, 'is that sickness of which it is true that it is the greatest misfortune never to have had it; [...]'

Terry Eagleton, Hope without Optimism, p. 128

<解説>

'Despair', Kierkegaard writes, 'is that sickness of which it is true that it is the greatest misfortune never to have had it; [...]'

関係代名詞の節は of which から never to have had it まで。

of which it is true that it is the greatest misfortune never to have had it

元になっているのは「it is true of ~ that S V」(~に関しては、SVということが真実である)という文で、it is true の it は形式主語、that節が本当の主語です。

it is the greatest misfortune never to have had it

先頭の it は形式主語、本当の主語は never to have had it。

'Despair', Kierkegaard writes, 'is that sickness ←[of which it is true that it is the greatest misfortune never to have had it]'

ワインの百科事典、『The Oxford Companion to Wine 』より。

Only then was it irrefutably demonstrated what had been suspected, that Zinfandel is one and the same as the Primitivo of southern Italy.

The Oxford Companion to Wine, p. 792

解説>

Only then was it irrefutably demonstrated what had been suspected, that Zinfandel is one and the same as the Primitivo of southern Italy.

本当の主語は what had been suspected(証拠はないが事実だろうと人々が思っていたこと)。

one and the same は「完全に同じもの」。

Only then was it irrefutably demonstrated what had been suspected, that Zinfandel is one and the same as the Primitivo of southern Italy.

what had been suspected で過去完了が使われているのは、then(その時)、つまり、品種の特定にDNA鑑定が用いられるようになった1990年代前半の視点から、それ以前の状況を振り返っているからです。
