There is something inhuman about this music's very virtuosity, marked as it is by a vein of "diabolical cleverness."

Terry Eagleton, On Evil, p. 60

<解説>

There is something inhuman about this music's very virtuosity, marked as it is by a vein of "diabolical cleverness."

marked (as it is) by a vein of "diabolical cleverness"

Iago, like many a Shakespearian cynic, is partly a clown, reveling as he does in debunking and deflating.

Terry Eagleton, On Evil, p. 86

<解説>

Iago, like many a Shakespearian cynic, is partly a clown, reveling as he does in debunking and deflating.

many a ~ で「多くの~」。

reveling (as he does) in debunking and deflating

The resurrection for Christians is not a metaphor. It is real enough, but not in the sense that you could have taken a photograph of it had you been lurking around Jesus's tomb armed with a Kodak.

Terry Eagleton, Reason, Faith, and Revolution, p. 119

<解説>

The resurrection for Christians is not a metaphor. It is real enough,

but not in the sense that you could have taken a photograph of it had you been lurking around Jesus's tomb armed with a Kodak.

in the sense that S V で「SVという意味で」。

had you been ~ →「if S had + 過去分詞」(仮にSが~していたなら)と同等の意味を「had S + 過去分詞」で表すことができます。

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Classics)
Wilde, Oscar

On a little table of dark perfumed wood thickly incrusted with nacre, a present from Lady Radley, his guardian's wife, a pretty professional invalid, who had spent the preceding winter in Cairo, was lying a note from Lord Henry, and beside it was a book bound in yellow paper, the cover slightly torn and the edges spoiled.

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, p. 119

解説>

On a little table of dark perfumed wood thickly incrusted with nacre, a present from Lady Radley, his guardian's wife, a pretty professional invalid, who had spent the preceding winter in Cairo, was lying a note from Lord Henry,

his guardian's wife と a pretty professional invalid はともに Lady Radley と同格。

and beside it was a book bound in yellow paper, the cover slightly torn and the edges spoiled.

この文も MVS の倒置文で、主語は a book bound in yellow paper。

'Just turn your head a little more to the right, Dorian, [...],' said the painter, deep in his work, and conscious only that a look had come into the lad's face that he had never seen there before.

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, p. 21

解説>

'Just turn your head a little more to the right, Dorian, [...],' said the painter, deep in his work, and conscious only that a look had come into the lad's face that he had never seen there before.

conscious that S V

that he had never ~ の that は look を先行詞とする関係代名詞です。
