The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Classics)
Wilde, Oscar
Penguin Classics
2003-02-01

On a little table of dark perfumed wood thickly incrusted with nacre, a present from Lady Radley, his guardian's wife, a pretty professional invalid, who had spent the preceding winter in Cairo, was lying a note from Lord Henry, and beside it was a book bound in yellow paper, the cover slightly torn and the edges spoiled.

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, p. 119

解説>

On a little table of dark perfumed wood thickly incrusted with nacre, a present from Lady Radley, his guardian's wife, a pretty professional invalid, who had spent the preceding winter in Cairo, was lying a note from Lord Henry,

his guardian's wife と a pretty professional invalid はともに Lady Radley と同格。

and beside it was a book bound in yellow paper, the cover slightly torn and the edges spoiled.

この文も MVS の倒置文で、主語は a book bound in yellow paper。

It is never clear what time the news will end, nor how long the following weather forecast will last. Then comes the longest series of adverts that you will ever have seen in your life before there can be any question of the film starting.

Charles Timoney, A Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi, p.15

解説>

It is never clear what time the news will end, nor how long the following weather forecast will last.

Then comes the longest series of adverts that you will ever have seen in your life before there can be any question of the film starting.

全体は the longest ~ in your life の部分を主語とする MVS の倒置文です。

There is no question of ~(~の可能性はない)というフレーズを変形したものです。

There was no question of his/him cancelling the trip so near the departure date.
(Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Classics)
Wilde, Oscar
Penguin Classics
2003-02-01

The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, [...].

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, p. 5

解説>

The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden

there came (through the open door) the heavy scent of the lilac

There came S. で「Sが来た」。

I think the looms, with that quite complicated machinary, in the middle of which sits the little figure, will also lend themselves to pen drawings.

Van Gogh: Painted with Words, (00:19:27)

<解説>

I think the looms, with that quite complicated machinary, in the middle of which sits the little figure, will also lend themselves to pen drawings.

先行詞は that quite complicated machinary。

関係代名詞の節 in the middle of which sits the little figure は MVS の倒置で、the little figure が主語になっています(M は副詞として働く部分です)。

I think the looms, with that quite complicated machinary, in the middle of which sits the little figure, will also lend themselves to pen drawings.

South along the entire length of the Hungarian frontier lies Burgenland [...] , whose climate is influenced by the juxtaposition of hills and the Pannonian Plain, as well as by a single, geographically anomalous, broad and shallow lake, near whose shores are grown most of Austria's important nobly sweet wines.

Parker's Wine Bargains: The World's Best Wine Values Under $25, p. 56

解説>

South along the entire length of the Hungarian frontier lies Burgenland [...] , whose climate is influenced by the juxtaposition of hills and the Pannonian Plain, as well as by a single, geographically anomalous, broad and shallow lake, near whose shores are grown most of Austria's important nobly sweet wines.

near whose shores are grown most of Austria's important nobly sweet wines.

near whose shores are grown most of Austria's important nobly sweet wines.

most of Austria's important nobly sweet wines
