On Evil (English Edition)
Eagleton, Terry
Yale University Press

enter into purchase agreements

Most of us, [...], recognise that small children can no more be evil than get divorced or enter into purchase agreements.

Terry Eagleton, On Evil, p. 5

<解説>

Most of us, [...], recognise that small children can no more be evil than get divorced or enter into purchase agreements.

① Small children can be evil.

② Small children can get divorced or enter into purchase agreements.

no more の no は、more の度合いがゼロであることを示します。
Small children can be evil.」が成り立つ度合いと「Small children can get divorced or enter into purchase agreements.」

Hope is a slender reed, a castle in the air, agreeable company but a poor guide, fine sauce but scanty food.

Terry Eagleton, Hope without Optimism, p. 39

<解説>

Hope is a slender reed, a castle in the air, agreeable company but a poor guide, fine sauce but scanty food.

a slender reed
a castle in the air
agreeable company but a poor guide
fine sauce but scanty food

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Penguin Classics)
Wilde, Oscar
Penguin Classics
2003-02-01

I remember her bringing me up to a truculent and red-faced old gentleman covered all over with orders and ribbons, and hissing into my ear, in a tragic whisper which must have been audible to everybody in the room, the most astonishing details.

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, p. 11

<解説>

I remember her bringing me up to a truculent and red-faced old gentleman covered all over with orders and ribbons, and hissing into my ear, in a tragic whisper which must have been audible to everybody in the room, the most astonishing details.

bring O up to ~ で「Oを~のところに連れてくる」。
