mistaking, for a house in which to live, an inn that is but suitable for the sojourn of a night においては、an inn that is ~ の部分が mistaking の目的語。これは mistake O for ~（Oを～と間違える）のOを後ろに置いたもので、VとOの間に副詞的な語句（M）が挿入されているVMOという形です。
that is but suitable の but は only の意味です。
